S4 Area Guide

S4

Burngreave, Grimesthorpe, Pitsmoor

The S4 postcode area of Sheffield skirts the north of the city centre and reaches up and includes Burngreave, Pitsmoor and Grimesthorpe.  Much of the southerly part of this postcode is made of industrial units.

The main type of housing in S4 are semi-detached houses and terraces.  With this area of Sheffield being so affordable its popularity is growing, especially due to the strong transport links, direct access into the city centre and being only a short distance from Valley Centretainment and the Sheffield Arena.

Much of the tenure is rented from private landlords: This coupled with the very reasonable house prices make it the perfect area to invest in a Buy to Let.

Burngreave and Pitsmoor are two of the most ethnically diverse neighbourhoods in Sheffield. This cultural richness is reflected in the number of different languages spoken locally and the variety of food on offer in local restaurants and shops.

There is a real sense of community amongst the residents of the S4 areas, and one of the ways this is demonstrated is by the existence of Pitsmoor Adventure Playground.  This is run by a charitable organisation set up by local people. The playground is for children up to 13 years old and qualified staff are on site during opening hours to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for local children and their parents.

Abbeyfield Park located in Pitsmoor, comprises of a bowling green (home of Abbeyfield Bowls Club), the parkland itself, as well as Abbeyfield House.  The upkeep of the park is due to the efforts of The Friends of Abbeyfield Park (FOAP) who have been actively campaigning on behalf of Abbeyfield Park since 1996. As well as raising money for general upkeep and improving facilities and safety, FOAP is also engaged to protect the future of Abbeyfield House.

Many events throughout the year are held at the park, such as free portrait drawing, clay oven building and flat bread making.  Every July Abbeydale Multicultural Festival is held here.

Other green spaces in S4 include Earl Marshal Recreation Ground and Grimesthorpe allotments.

S4 is home to Sheffield United Academy. The Under-18 and Under-23 teams play in Professional Development League 2.

Wicker Camp - Sheffield Thai Boxing Gymnasium is located on Effingham Road in the more industrial part of the area.  Founded in 1977 it is one of the oldest and biggest Thai Boxing camps in the U.K.

Greentop Community Circus can also be found in S4.  Greentop is the north of England's leading circus centre, where you can learn amazing new skills including aerial disciplines of trapeze, silks and hoop.

The choice of cuisine when dining out in S4 is diverse, including Italian, Indian, Chinese, Thai, British, Yemenite, Kurdish and Ethiopian.  Whether you fancy eating in or getting a take away, there’s something to suit everyone’s taste in S4.
